A Senior Sterile services technician is a healthcare professional who is responsible for cleaning, decontaminating and sterilising medical equipment.

You will be a vital member of the team, working to support our Central Sterile Services Department Manager, Tina, in the provision of a safe and effective decontamination and sterile supplies service to all departments within the hospital.

This will include ensuring that every medical device is prepared fit for the purpose prior to patient use and undertaking tasks involved with the decontamination process i.e. cleaning, checking, packing, assembling, sterilising and distribution of medical devices.

This role will be working 37.5 hours a week- With shifts being 7.30am - 3.30pm and 10:00am - 6:00pm Monday to Friday and 2 in 4 Saturday shifts, working one on and one off.

What you'll be doing

As a Senior Sterile services technician you will support the Manager of TSSU Department in the provision of a safe and effective decontamination and sterile supplies service to all departments within the hospital. To ensure that every medical device is prepared fit for the purpose prior to patient use.

You will undertake tasks involved with the decontamination process i.e. cleaning, checking, packing, assembling, sterilising and distribution of medical devices. To keep areas clean and tidy: maintain a safe and pleasant environment and assist with the smooth running of the Sterile Service Department.

  • Participate in all duties in accordance with departmental work schedules i.e. cleaning, checking, assembling, packing, sterilisation and distribution.
  • To report all defects identified in theatre trays and instruments to the TSSU manager.
  • To ensure that all relevant daily validation testing is undertaken and recorded on the appropriate documentation in compliance with local policies and procedures, or delegate this to an appropriately trained member of the team.
  • To be responsible for identifying and checking all returned instruments and equipment as specified on the tray specification sheet
  • To undertake quality checks for cleanliness and completeness of equipment before distribution
  • Prepare and record appropriate documentation e.g. labelling and recording for traceability.
  • To supervise, organise and allocate work to staff.
  • Train any new staff in each area of the department.
  • To ensure that PPE is always used as appropriate in line with policy
  • To ensure that universal precautions are maintained and processes follow infection control guidance.
  • To maintain security of the decontamination equipment and chemicals in accordance with departments policy.
  • To liaise with other departments to ensure their requirements are met
  • To accept and ensure all loan equipment is received onto the tracking system, processed ready for surgery.
  • To evaluate all non-conformities raised and report findings to the TSSU manager.
  • Review instrument needs and be involved in business motivation for instruments and equipment
  • To ensure all equipment and instrumentation are maintained and in good working order.
  • To monitor stocks of raw materials and order what is needed as and when required ensuring to record this.
  • Identify surgical instruments that require repair and send them to the relevant company.
What we'll look for in you
This role would be a great first post within a healthcare setting for someone with little to no experience, who has excellent communication skills and an interested in the procedures relating to sterile services.

All you need is
  • Experience working as a Sterile service technician or a TSSU department
  • A willingness to learn
  • comfortable working within a team environment
  • Good standard of written and spoken English
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • You have your Hepatitis B and TB vaccination or willing to get them, This is a requirement for the role
