NHS 111 Health Advisor - located onsite in Dorking, Surrey

Ever wanted to play your part in an exciting service that really makes a difference to everyone's lives? As a key member of our 111 team in Dorking you'll be doing just that.

This is your chance to train to be a Health Advisor in our 111 call centre, handling calls from members of the public. You'll learn how to use a state-of-the-art triage tool called NHS Pathways to assess patients over the phone and direct them to the most appropriate care. Although these are not emergency calls, you'll also need to be prepared to deal with emotional, distressing or life-threatening scenarios and to arrange for 999 services if required.
We offer enhanced pay rates for weekends, we are offering part-time roles from 24 hours per week upwards to full-time hours of 37.5 hours per week to cover our core shifts and assist patients when they most need us. Our core periods are evenings, weekends and bank holidays, so you will be required to work shifts at those times.

Please note: If you require hours of more than 30 hours per week , including full-time roles (37.5 hours), we can accommodate you if you are happy to work more weekend hours - this may mean working every weekend and taking days off during the week . ( It will be more likely to place you in suitable shifts if you can work these types of hours).

The extensive training equips you with valuable skills and includes assessments. We are offering fully paid training courses on a full-time basis, Monday-Friday (9am-5pm) for 4 weeks. We also offer part-time courses running Tues, Weds, Thurs evenings (6pm-9:30pm) and Sat-Sun (9am-5pm) for 6 weeks). You must attend every training day. This is followed by a further eight weeks' support before you are signed off to work on your own.

• Monday 19th May 2025 - Full Time

Once you've completed your training, you can join the team part-time (or full-time as explained above) on your pre-approved shift pattern . However, please note that this is a 24/7, 365-days-a-year service and is particularly busy at weekends so you should expect to work at these times, plus some bank holidays, which may include Christmas.

What you'll be doing

As part of 111, you will be the first point of contact for members of the public with a 24hour urgent but non-emergency health concern, you will be providing advice and signposting assistance to onward care utilising the NHS Pathways triage system.

Your responsibilities will vary which includes following assessment:

• Managing calls from patients and healthcare professionals
• Use computer systems to capture patient information
• Communicate effectively in a healthcare environment with colleagues as well as callers
• If they are well, advice and support on accessing local services such as general practice, dentists, pharmacies and other healthcare services.
• Transfer calls to our clinical assessment services which is on hand 24/7 to provide expert advice, assessment and support.
• If they have a query about their medication, immediate support from a pharmacist
• Be required to deal with distressing and emergency situations

What you will get:

• Pay:
• £12.11 per hour- daytime and during training (07:00-23:00)
• £15.05 per hour - contractual night rate (23:00-24:00)
• £15.58 per hour - further pay enhancements when working between 18:00 Friday-midnight, and any hours worked on Saturday or Sunday. Please note that the weekend rate is guaranteed but it is not contractual, it is just an incentive for working unsociable hours.

What we'll look for in you

What you will need:

• GCSE/Functional Skills English and Maths at Grade C (or equivalent) or above.

• Excellent listening and communication skills, ideally with IT and keyboard skills, plus some previous experience of working and communicating with the public.

• A real passion for helping other people, with the ability to learn all sorts of new skills and to thrive and develop in a fun, friendly, well-supported team.
